CINCINNATI — The Society of Professional Journalists Greater Cincinnati Pro Chapter has recognized WHIO-TV with the most broadcast awards out of any Dayton and Cincinnati area media outlet.
Most of News Center 7′s 10 total SPJ Cincinnati wins and finalist nominations focused on WHIO’s Memorial Day tornado coverage, including best newscast, best documentary: A Community Rises, special report: Walking The Path of the Storm and Chief Meteorologist McCall Vrydaghs and Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini’s “Cloudy with a Chance of Podcast.”
The I-team’s Molly Koweek and Matthew Simon’s investigative reporting on the Austin Hopkin’s case and a loophole leaving veterans without emergency medical coverage were also honored.
Channel 7′s John Bedell’s “The Truth about Tourette’s” received best feature story. WHIO Special Projects Photojournalist Mike Burianek, who shot and edited Bedell’s story, won four total awards, including best videographer.
News Center 7′s Sean Cudahy and Photojournalist Chuck Hamlin were also each finalists for best reporter and best videographer.
