CENTERVILLE — A local school district has announced that a longtime assistant has been promoted to head coach.

Centerville City Schools has named John Puckett as the new head football coach at Centerville High School, according to a school district spokesperson.
He replaces Brent Ullery who resigned in December after eight years as the Elks head football coach, according to a previous News Center 7 report.

Puckett has coached football since 1999. This includes 11 years as the Elks varsity defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. He was a head coach at Vandalia High School, the spokesperson said.
“Since I joined Centerville in 2010, becoming the head football coach has been my dream. We have an ideal combination of outstanding administration, strong community and parental support, and amazing kids. I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to uphold the Elks’ tradition of toughness!” he said.
Puckett graduated from Chaminade Julienne High School.
“Congratulations to CJ grad Johnny Puckett,” the CJ football wrote on social media.
Centerville advanced to the Division I state semifinals this past season before losing to eventual state runner-up Archbishop Moeller on Nov. 29.
