A frantic 911 call obtained by News Center 7 indicates a 2-year-old boy shot himself in the leg. The caller identified herself as the child’s mother.
“My son was shot in the leg,” the caller said.
Moments later, the caller said “we’re running next door to our father-in-law’s house. He is a police officer.”
As authorities responded to the scene, the caller said the bleeding was controlled with a tourniquet.
“I hope the little baby’s all right,” German Township resident Gary McCarthy said.
McCarthy lives next door to the house where the shooting happened.
“It don’t sound right to me. I’ve been around guns all my life,” McCarthy said.
He said he started talking with one of his other neighbors and struggled to understand how this happened.
“I asked Jim, you know, if it’s an automatic he’d had to kick the safety off,” McCarthy said.
McCarthy said he would be checking on his neighbors over the next couple of days.
“Oh yeah, well, you know we’re pretty close here,” he said.
News Center 7 asked Stitzel if this was a self-inflicted shooting, but he said that is under investigation.
We will continue to follow this story.
