As seen on News Center 7 at 5:00 p.m., Karley Hilldreth recalled the fateful night just over a week ago as a Kettering Health emergency room nurse’s assistant.

“Definitely never thought that, you know, I’d come home one day and have a dog,” Hilldreth said.

Just several months into her new position, she and her co-workers tried to save the life of a woman who had been living in her car.

Medics had brought the woman in on a stretcher, but doctors and staff were not able to save her.

Along with the woman had come an older dog, with no name, no history, and now with no home.

“We call, like Dayton PD. We call a bunch of animal shelters, things like that. No one was able to take her, whether it be because of the beds or just, you know, situation-wise,” Hilldreth said. “We were trying to kind of figure it out, but, yeah, at some point we were kind of like, okay, like, does anyone want to take the dog home?”

The dog, later named Honey, went home with Hilldreth. Just over a week later, Hilldreth has wholeheartedly come to the decision that Honey belongs with her.

With no family or friends to track down, the thought of putting Honey in a shelter was one she simply could not do.

“I don’t want to take the risk of putting her in that situation and her, you know, being lonely and upset. You know, she had just lost her companion and her partner,” Hilldreth said. “So I don’t want to put her in an environment like that. I don’t want anything to be like that. It’s just not that I got a good life to live.”

That’s a scenario Honey won’t have to experience anytime soon.
