Mike DeWine wins reelection to second term as Ohio governor

Republican Incumbent Mike DeWine will continue his long career in public service, with a second four-year term as Governor, WHIO declares.

DeWine was previously the 50th Attorney General of Ohio and also has previously been elected to serve as Greene County Prosecutor, Ohio State Senator, U.S. Congressman, Ohio Lt. Governor, U.S. Senator.

DeWine’s achievements include securing the $20 billion Intel Semiconductor Factory project, which is projected to bring more than 20,000 jobs to the state.

Raised in Yellow Springs, he has ties to the Miami Valley. Something he shared with his competitor.

Democratic candidate Nan Whaley succumbed to Dewine. She served as Dayton’s mayor from 2014 until 2022.

Whaley was the first woman nominated for governor of Ohio by a major party.

Whaley led the city through the tragedy of the Oregon District Shooting in 2019 that killed nine people.

She demanded better gun control from lawmakers.

“When we get common-sense gun legislation through, that will be a day of great joy,” Whaley said.

The tragedy that brought the two together three years ago, now divides them.

Whaley issued a statement on the results of the governor race, it reads in part:

“We can keep working for an economy that works for every Ohioan, whether you live in Dayton or Cleveland Heights or Marietta. We can keep working to root out the rampant corruption that we know has infected our Statehouse. We can keep working to pass common sense gun reform, and make all of our communities more safe. We can keep working to raise the minimum wage, pass universal pre-k, and every other common sense policy that working families need in this state. And we can keep fighting for abortion rights.

“The last 20 months have been filled with high and lows. And while tonight wasn’t the high we had hoped for, I still believe in Ohio. I still believe that our citizens deserve better than what they’re getting. And believe in the people of this state to get us there. I’m going to keep fighting for Ohio, and I know you will too.”
