Tuberculosis is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It typically affects the lungs, but can also impact the brain, kidneys, and spine.
The CDC says symptoms of tuberculosis include:
- A cough that lasts three weeks or longer
- Chest pain
- Coughing up blood or sputum (phlegm from deep inside the lungs)
- Weakness or fatigue
- Weight loss
- Loss of appetite
- Chills
- Fever
- Night sweats
Tuberculosis can be fatal if not treated properly.
