“Their families and the American people deserve transparency and truth. It is in the national interest to finally release all records related to these assassinations without delay,” the executive order states.

An act from 1992 required the disclosure of the assassination of JFK by 2017, but the full release was postponed due to harm to intelligence operations. According to the executive order, the information has been reviewed and redacted multiple times from 2017 until now.

“I have now determined that the continued redaction and withholding of information from records pertaining to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy is not consistent with the public interest and the release of these records is long overdue,” the executive order states.

The executive order gives the Director of National Intelligence 15 days to make a plan for the “full and complete” disclosure of records.

It also gives the Director of National Intelligence 45 days to make a plan to release the records for the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
