Risk for strong weekend storms; what needs to happen for them to turn severe

DAYTON — The Miami Valley is looking at a “conditional” risk for severe storms this weekend.

Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist Austin Chaney has been following this system. He will have the latest TIMING and TRACK LIVE on News Center 7 at 11.

Saturday brings a risk for severe storms, but the atmosphere will have to meet specific conditions for the storms to become severe, Chaney said.

How long morning clouds and scattered showers persist will have a big say in what happens during the afternoon.

The longer they hang around, the more likely it is that we miss out on the risk of severe storms, Chaney said.

However, if we get some sunshine and recharge time, some storms may redevelop during the afternoon and could be strong to severe.

Damaging winds would be the main threat during the afternoon.

It is very much a conditional risk, and quite likely that the greatest risk for severe misses us somewhere to the east.
