Recreation centers to serve as warming centers due to dangerous cold in Dayton

DAYTON — The City of Dayton announced it will operate three recreation centers as warming centers this week.

They are scheduled to be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

All three centers are closed today due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, according to a City of Dayton spokesperson.

As previously reported by News Center 7, the entire region is under a Cold Weather Advisory until Wednesday morning.

Our Storm Center 7 team of meteorologists says the coldest temperatures are currently forecasted for Wednesday, Jan. 22, with possible wind chills of -20 degrees.

The warming center locations are as follows:

  • Greater Dayton Recreation Center – 2021 W. Third St.
  • Lohrey Recreation Center – 2366 Glenarm Ave.
  • Northwest Recreation Center – 1600 Princeton Dr.

For shelter needs after hours, the following St. Vincent de Paul shelters are available:

  • Women and Families- 120 W. Apple Street
  • Men- 1921 S. Gettysburg Avenue

“Residents are also encouraged to check on their neighbors for any assistance they may need and to remember the shelter needs of pets,” the spokesperson said.

The City of Dayton also had warming centers opened last week, according to a previous News Center 7 story.
