Our News Center 7 crew spotted a large police response in the 1200 block of Wisconsin Blvd. around 11 a.m. There were multiple Dayton Police cruisers and a SWAT vehicle at the scene.
U.S. Marshals were trying to serve an arrest warrant on a wanted person, who Dayton Police Sergeant Creigee S. Coleman said was wanted in connection to a homicide that happened in Dayton.
They could not convince him to come out of a home he’d gone into, leading to Dayton Police and a SWAT team being called in to assist.
News Center 7 was there as police came over a loudspeaker to try and get the man inside to come out.
“Come out of the house with your hands up, nothing in your hands. This is Dayton Police,” the officer said.

After several other attempts at tactics to get the suspect out failed to work, tear gas was deployed. Sometime later, the suspect came out of the house and was taken into custody.
While police didn’t confirm the name of the man taken into custody, online jail records show that 42-year-old Angelo Champion was arrested in the 1200 block of Wisconsin Blvd. today.
Champion was charged with murder, felonious assault, and a weapons charge in November in connection to a homicide that happened on Arlene and Forsythe avenues that same month. As reported on News Center at 5:00, court records show he’s accused of shooting and killing Djuan Hall.
“With the SWAT team and the history of this person, we solved this situation without the use of force, without the use of guns. Everybody is going home safely,” Coleman said.
Coleman also confirmed that a woman and her young child were in the house when U.S. Marshals arrived.
News Center 7′s Mike Campbell spoke to a relative of that resident about the standoff. She wished to remain anonymous but said the entire incident became nerve-wracking.
“He should have come out sooner,” she said. “If you care about your child, why would you put his house and his mom at risk like that?”
Champion is currently booked in the Montgomery County Jail. It’s unclear at this time if more charges will be filed in connection to Thursday’s standoff.
