Kansas City fans know the Chiefs’ all-pro left guard as Joe Thuney.
But at the Thuney house in Washington Township, Mike and Beth, refer to their son just a little differently.
“Yeah, he’s Joseph. I mean, he was our baby the last one born -- sort of a surprise. And so that’s always been his name,” Mike said.
The Thuneys will fly to New Orleans next week.

They’ve been there before for regular-season games.
But now they’re headed to Super Bowl LIX.
“It’s always a little nervous, but always excited,” Beth said. “I mean, we’re just so proud he got to this stage in his career and this season and so it’s – and it’s icing on the cake if they win. Just getting here is really exciting. And we’re proud,” Beth said.
Joe won two Super Bowls with the Patriots blocking for Tom Brady.
So far, he’s won two more with the Chiefs protecting Patrick Mahomes.
A pectoral injury kept Joe out of last year’s Super Bowl, but he’s healthy this year.
“We appreciate after all his hard work and, practice and diligence that he gets to play and be out on the field,” Beth said.
The Big Game comes with a new position for Joe.
The Chiefs slid him over from his usual slot at left guard to left tackle.
Kansas City first made the switch in mid-December against the Browns.
If the Chiefs win, he will be tied for the second-most Super Bowl wins by one player with five – and would only trail his former teammate, Tom Brady who has seven.
But his parents say he will be more focused on a team goal.
“I think really his key is just to try and help this team do something no other team has ever done — which is win three in a row,” Mike said.
