Ohio’s first human case of bird flu in 2025 reported in our area

MERCER COUNTY — The state’s first human case of bird flu in 2025 has been reported in the Miami Valley.

As reported on News Center 7 at 11:00 and News Center 7 Daybreak, the state’s human case of bird flu is in Mercer County.

The infected man is a farm worker who encountered dead commercial poultry and got infected, according to the Ohio Department of Health (ODH).

Human infections with bird flu can happen when the virus comes in contact with a person’s eyes, nose, and mouth, or gets inhaled.

The ODH advised the public to avoid direct contact with wild birds or sick or dead poultry.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers the current risk of bird flu for the general public to be low.
