Danita Pitts, who’s daughter is a seventh grader Carlisle Local Schools, is worried for her daughter’s safety.
“To this day, my daughter still can’t talk about it without crying,” Pitts said.
According to Pitts, her daughter was in class on Sept. 17 when a male student approached her and said he was going to kill her and every other black kid in her class.
Pitt’s daughter told her teacher, and it was brought to the principal and superintendent.
Pitt did not allow her daughter to return to class until she knew she had some level of protection. “She stayed out of school for a few days, and then she went back only because the student was removed,” Pitts said.
The student was expelled from the school, but he will be able to return to school in two weeks.
Carlisle Local Schools provided News Center 7 with a statement which said, in part: “While we don’t condone threats or inappropriate behavior, every student has a right to education[...] It is policy to allow a student to return after lengthy disciplinary action. Our priority is to maintain a learning environment where all students feel safe, respected and able to focus on education.”
The school is planning to uphold a no contact order between Pitts’ daughter and the student.
“It says, within 500 feet, I don’t see how. I don’t see how they can actually keep him away,” Pitts said.
Pitts says what hurts her most is how this has affected her daughter.
“I call her my joy because she’s the joy of the house,” Pitts said. “I’m going to have to get her some type of counseling now because she’s not as happy as she usually is.”
Pitts says she will be keeping her kids at Carlisle Local Schools.
“Me and my children talked about it. I told the superintendent that it’s not fair for my child to feel like she needs to leave when the threat was made towards her,” Pitts said.
Pitts says she will be keeping a close eye on her children’s behavior once the student returns to school.
