Kayla Shepherd, 29, and Kyle Knox, 38, are co-defendants in this case. While she faces a handful of child endangering charges, Knox faces more than 100 counts involving graphic child abuse.
As reported on News Center 7 at 5:00, Shepherd’s lawyer asked Montgomery County Common Pleas Court Judge Mary Montgomery to declare the search of her home illegal during a suppression hearing on Thursday.

Dayton Police obtained a search warrant for the home back in November, the same day that Shepherd’s 9-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son were spotted walking up the street alone. A good Samaritan saw them and called the police.
The girl told officers they’d escaped the house and that she and her brother had been confined to one room in the house since June 2024, as News Center 7 previously reported.
Police noticed the boy had severe swelling of the face and lips, as well as lacerations to his back. He was rushed to Dayton Children’s Hospital, where doctors said his injuries looked like he was a victim of torture.
The girl told police Knox used lighters, belts, box cutters, and his fists to abuse her brother.
Court documents showed police found blood on the walls and mattresses in the room where they believe the children were isolated.
Montgomery said she would review the request and issue a decision but did not give a timeline on how long that would take.
As for Knox, he is scheduled to appear in court for his own suppression hearing next month.
