A 911 caller told dispatchers that they beat on the doorways and windows of the duplex to try and help the people inside.
When a dispatcher asked if there were flames coming from the home, the caller said they were “shooting out big time.”
Video captured by an iWitness7 viewer showed heavy flames coming from the roof and windows of the duplex.
Piqua’s Assistant Fire Chief Doug Stewart said firefighters tried to get into the duplex through the flames but ran into more trouble.
“However the crew that was inside, on that side of the apartment, they could only make it about halfway through since there was a partial roof collapse and we had to pull everybody out for their safety,” Stewart said.
Miami County Coroner Dr. Bill Ginn confirmed a man and woman were found dead in the fire. The victims were identified as Lillie Patton, 56, and Cyril Dapore, 51. Ginn said their deaths appeared to be fire-related.
As reported on News Center 7 at 5:00, Stewart said it had been “a couple years” since their last fatal fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Piqua Fire Department is working with Miami County and State Fire Marshal’s Office investigators.
