Man who put cat into bag, slammed it on the ground in Butler County learns sentence

HAMILTON — A man who was caught on video putting a cat into a bag and slamming it on the ground in Butler County has been sentenced.

News Center 7 previously reported that 27-year-old Zhean Bai was arrested and charged with felony abuse of a companion animal and breaking and entering.

On Jan. 24, 2024, Bai allegedly chased a cat into the Indian Springs Apartment Complex in Hamilton.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office shared a video during a press conference that showed Bai allegedly putting the cat into a white trash bag and then slamming the bag to the ground,

The cat was dumped in the bad behind the building but was found alive by the dog warden, according to a previous News Center 7 report.

The cat sustained a fractured pelvis and fractured spine from the incident and had to be euthanized.

Bai pleaded No Contest to one count of Cruelty to a Companion Animal, a fifth-degree felony on Jan. 9, 2025, according to Butler County Court of Common Pleas Documents.

The breaking and entering charge was dropped.

Bai was found guilty and sentenced to spend 30 days in jail, with a credit of 7 days. He was also sentenced to a year of probation.

As part of his plea, he agreed to pay $295 in restitution, according to court documents.

Bai is currently booked in the Butler County Jail with a $25,000 bail.
