Prosecutors said he fired 40 shots outside his home in April 2024 and one of them killed 18-year-old LaRod DeLong.
He was in court for his sentencing on Monday afternoon. There, DeLong’s family delivered victim impact statements ahead of the sentence being announced.
“This defendant took my baby boy away from me,” Rodney Lowe, Sr., DeLong’s father, said.
Lowe told the judge what happened almost a year ago was the worst day of his life. His son died after being shot in the head while trying to run away from Wood’s house on Auburn Avenue.
“My son was running away, he was running away. This man hit him two times,” Lowe said.
As reported on News Center 7 at 5:00, Wood’s lawyer said he was alerted to motion or activity outside his home. He claimed that when Wood opened the door, he believed two people were breaking into his car or home. Police said he then opened fire.
Wood took the opportunity to address the court during his sentence and said he was “truly heartbroken” by what happened.
“I recognize the severity of my actions,” Wood said. “I just want to apologize.”
Wood was sentenced to a minimum of 11 to 15 years in prison. He has 30 days to file an appeal if he so chooses.
