As reported on News Center 7 at 5, during the celebration at the University of Dayton, police were dealing with out of control crowds.
UD said that there were around 44 medic calls during the chaos.
Police said at one point, uncooperative crowds on Lowes Street forced them to use “chemical munitions”, which can include things like pepper spray and tear gas.
“I heard a bunch of commotion and everyone kind of ran and saw the cops were like the only ones on the street,” UD Sophomore Matthew Fraleigh said. “I mean it was a good time but I wish it didn’t get out of hand like it did,” Fraleigh said.

UD Junior Lauren Insco said several warnings from campus safety leaders went out to students, including demands to clear the streets.
“Many of those in attendance did leave the area when told; however, some in the crowd resorted to throwing bottles and other objects at officers. This unacceptable behavior caused an escalation in crowd control,” Savalas Kidd, assistant vice president and chief of police at UD said.
Lowes Street was cleared around 4:45 p.m., UD said.
Insco wasn’t outside this time due to what she experienced a couple of years ago.
“There was tear gas that exploded and rubber bullets that were fired and I did get hit by a rubber bullet,” Insco said.
Later that night on Brown Street, officers were attempting to disperse a large crowd when shots were fired, according to Dayton police.
One suspect, identified as Elijah Murph-Heard, ran into the street in front of an officer.
The officer attempted to stop Murph-Head by knocking him down. The collision caused the officer to flip off their bike and be injured.
Murph-Head was arrested and booked into jail on a warrant.
“It really just got shut down but it’s also totally understandable because like when there is a gun involved you need to go home, you need to lock your doors, need to stay safe,” Insco said.
