Cairns said medics took a driver and their passenger to a local hospital. The passenger died from their injuries.
The other driver told police that he would get to the hospital on his own.
“One car was heading westbound on Helena, and the other car was coming eastbound on Helena, turning northbound onto Stanley Avenue,” Cairns said. “And then that’s how that T-bone occurred.”
Tycius Williams has lived in the apartment building across the intersection for two years. He was shocked to hear what happened on Wednesday.
“For real, that’s what happened?” Williams said. “I don’t know why anything would happen like that, I’m sorry that someone passed away.”
Williams said he has seen reckless driving near his apartment before.
“They’ll fly in the parking lot and people are supposed to wait for the other people to turn... They just ignore all that,” Williams said. “People be cutting people off, I think that’s what happened is, is somebody was trying to make it through or something and he tried to get through and he might have hit a stop sign.”
Police are still working to figure out what happened and who is at fault.
“A lot of investigation still has to go into this, we’ll try to determine speeds of the vehicle,” Cairns said. “Anytime you have, you know, kind of a commercial area and businesses and then there is a residential building right here and so people will kind of use this area to cut through across the river because it goes over the river, so it is particularly busy or it is a busier street, so we do see accidents from time to time.”
Dayton police detectives spoke with both drivers involved in the crash.
