The city originally passed a moratorium banning the sale of marijuana back in November. Tuesday, City Manager Matt Greeson explained what the city did during that time.

“Staff has closely monitored state level regulatory efforts,” Greeson said. “We examined the efforts of other communities, conducted research and spent time discussing this information in several workshops and meetings.”

After all their research, the city council voted 5:1 in favor of the ban.

The Kettering community is falling on both sides of this issue.

“I think it’s a missed opportunity because you can help people so much,” Kettering resident Meagan Steiner said.

Steiner said the city is now missing out on revenue because of their decision.

“There’s a lot of people out there [...] that use it for medical use and also for recreational use,” Steiner said.

Other community members say this was a great decision.

“Yeah, that’s good for the city,” Daisy Weiss from Kettering said.

Weiss says she doesn’t think the selling of adult use marijuana is beneficial to the city, but she does know someone who uses it recreationally.

“I know they really abuse it,” Weiss said. “They became really addicted to it.”

Steiner says the effects of marijuana just depend on the person that is using it.

“I feel like there’s a lot of good and negative, and I feel like people need to be more positive about it because it is healing,” Steiner said.
