Hundreds of feral cats spark complaints among village community; Mayor talks about solutions

PLEASANT HILL, Miami County — Neighbors say hundreds of stray cats are creating a nuisance around their village in Miami County.

As reported by News Center 7 at 5:30, the Village of Pleasant Hill has a population of less than 2,000 people, and the mayor estimates at least 200 cats are roaming the streets.

Mayor Brenda Carroll said she hears the resident’s complaints and is working on solutions.

One picture from residents shows more than a dozen cats gathered in a driveway because someone put food out for them.

Carroll said feeding cats is the biggest problem. She wants to remind the community that feeding stray animals is illegal.

The village is considering several solutions to this problem. One includes trapping the cats, spaying or neutering them, and then releasing them.

Carroll said she talked to the Miami County Animal Shelter Director Robert Craft about solutions.

“He was saying if you don’t feed the cats, the cats will go away. They will. We want to find a food source. You know, they they don’t care where it is. If it’s convenient right where they’re at, they’ll stay. If it’s not there, they will go someplace else,” Carroll said.

She added that the village is holding a meeting on Dec. 9 to continue discussing options.
