News Center 7′s Mason Fletcher said part of the parking lot remained blocked off. He saw the coroner’s investigators at the scene.

A man called Springfield dispatchers and told them he shot and killed his ex-girlfriend in the 700 block of Villa Road, according to a Springfield Police sergeant.

“This involves shots fired at the Villa Road Apartments,” dispatchers said.

Springfield Police responded to the apartment complex, but several officers had to in a different direction.

“They want a unit to come southbound on (US) 68,” the dispatcher said.

Fletcher said that was because dispatchers said the man who called the police would not stop for officers. He led them on a chase on U.S. 68 southbound.

“We can get in position for stopsticks if they go further than that,” the dispatchers said.

Fletcher reports before officers could stop him, they heard a gunshot from the man’s car. He crashed on U.S. 68 at U.S. 41 in Clark County.

“He just ran off the roadway and hit into a pole. (We’re) trying to get their location,” the dispatchers said.

As officers approached the car, dispatchers told News Center 7 they learned the man had a gunshot wound to his head. They said he shot himself while driving.

Police would not confirm his condition.

Fletcher spoke with one man who lives at the apartment complex where the shooting happened. He did not appear on camera but told him he’d never seen anything like this.

Other people told Fletcher they were sad to see the violence and it scares them.

News Center 7 is working to learn the woman’s name who died. We are also working to discover the suspect’s name and condition.

Fletcher asked Springfield Police about this, they told him to expect to hear more from the department on Thursday.

We will update this story.
