“I got up and went to go to the bathroom, because I heard a beeping, and I didn’t know what it was. And then I looked at the bathroom, and I could just see smoke wafting around,” Alissa Tripple said.

Tripple and her boyfriend have a 4-month-old baby.

“I told my boyfriend. I said, we’ve got to get up. We’ve got to go now, there’s a fire, and I just grabbed my baby and we just ran,” Tripple said.

When they got outside, they saw flames coming from the top floor.

“We just got in the car and sat, just in shock,” Tripple said.

Tripple tried to check on neighbors, making sure they and their pets made it out safe.

“One of the tenants jumped from a window on the third floor just to get out,” Tripple said. “I’m glad to hear he’s okay.”

Two people were injured in the fire, a third was rescued by firefighters and taken to the hospital.

“There’s a lot of feelings and emotions today, but I’m glad that most of us are doing okay,” Tripple said.

Tripple had just moved into their apartment in November. She went back into their home after the fire to see what was salvageable.

“It was very emotional. I had a little area with his play mat and stuff on the floor, and it’s just flooded,” Tripple said. “His toys, his stuffed animals, are soaking wet.”

What is keeping Tripple going now is her faith.

“Say your prayers. He’s always going to come through,” Tripple said. “Please just hug your family really close and your pets.”

The Red Cross is paying for Tripple’s family to stay in a hotel for the next 10 days. Residents are hoping the building will be fixed soon.
