Woman fights back after man allegedly knocks her to ground, strangles her on local bike trail

SPRINGFIELD — Correction: A previous version of this story indicated the victim in this case was a girl under the age of 13, which was incorrectly inferred based on court filings. Police have since told News Center 7 the victim is an adult woman.

A man is in jail, accused of attacking a woman on a bike trail.

As reported on News Center 7 at 11, neighbors voiced their concerns about going on the trail after the attack.

Debbie Mines does not use the bike path but lives in the area.

She said people should be able to walk on the path without feeling unsafe.

“You should be able to go wherever you want without having to worry about that. But nowadays you have to worry about it. Everywhere you go. You need somebody,” Mines said.

On May 30, the woman was attacked by Adam Humphreys, court documents allege.

Humphreys, 18, reportedly scratched, strangled, and attempted to rape the victim

The woman was able to fight back and get away to call police.

Court records show Humphreys is a convicted sex offender.

News Center 7 could not find a case in online records, but this could be because he was convicted before he turned 18.

“I’m sure she got some trauma going on. I’m glad she got away,” Mines said.

She said she was worried about the victim and said that’s why her family tries to make sure no one is left alone.

“My granddaughter goes to Upward Bound, and her mom told her ‘buddy system’ everywhere you go,” Mines said.

Humphreys is currently in custody of the Clark County Jail.
