The watch will go into effect Monday, Jan. 20, at 1 a.m. and will remain in effect until Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 10 a.m.

What exactly does this mean? This means that wind chills of -20° or colder are possible, according to Storm Center 7 Weather Specialist Nick Dunn. Actual air temperatures during this cold stretch will feature morning lows below zero and highs in the single digits.

If this is the first you’ve heard of an “Extreme Cold Watch” that’s because it’s new — sort of.

The NWS announced that starting in October it will change how some winter weather advisories are named to help better convey the dangers of sub-zero temperatures.

On Monday windchill could reach -15 to -25 at their coldest, according to Dunn.

Sub-zero lows are expected again on Tuesday with wind chills at -15 or colder.
