2 men killed in Springfield shooting identified

SPRINGFIELD — Two men are dead after a shooting in Springfield on Sunday.

Springfield police were dispatched to the 2100 block of Larch Street on initial reports of a shooting just after 10:15 p.m.

A 911 caller told police about the shooting and said she feared a baby could be near the violence.

“There’s a baby in the house,” the caller said.

The 911 caller told dispatchers she was worried her brother had been shot and a woman and baby could be in the house.

“I need to get there to the baby,” she said.

Police beat the caller to the house and found two men “on the front porch with gunshot wounds,” according to a Springfield Police incident report.

One, identified by police as 35-year-old Clifton James Cummings, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second, identified as 30-year-old Spencer Sharp, was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased, according to the report.

The home has at least three visible cameras and a front door warning that security cameras are in use.

A neighbor told News Center 7 that he saw a car take off after the shots were fired. He also said he didn’t hear any arguing before the shooting.

Springfield Police have not said anything about the circumstances surrounding the shooting or if any weapons were recovered at the scene.
