As previously reported on News Center 7 at 11, the fire was put out at Boomerang Rubber around 8 p.m., but the fire crews said they were being extra cautious due to the amount of rubber in the building.

“Until we get that separated and moved around, it’ll smolder. So we’re addressing that now,” Botkins Fire Chief Tom Glass said.

The fire was first called in to the department around 6 p.m., Glass said. The call came from Police Chief Mark Jordan, who noticed smoke coming out of the building as he was driving by.

“Brings in four departments right away on my way to the fire,” Glass said. “And call for a second alarm due to the heavy black smoke coming from the structure.”

There were no workers in the building at the time of the fire.

Boomerang Rubber General Manager Bobby Brush says they don’t know how much damage there is yet.

Boomerang Rubber is a recycling plant, Brush says.

“We turn those into pickup truck bed mats, mud flaps, agricultural products,” Brush said.

Brush says he’s grateful the fire wasn’t worse.

“I feel better now that I’ve got the full report. It was isolated,” Brush said.

Fire investigators say they will return to Boomerang Rubber in the morning to continue their investigation into the fire.
