DAYTON — New video shows the moment an officer was hurt trying to arrest a man near the University of Dayton on Saturday.

As reported on News Center 7 at 11:00, the incident happened as students celebrated St. Patrick’s Day early on Brown Street.

Dayton officers were in the area of Brown and Stewart streets trying to break up a large “unruly” crowd when someone fired shots.
As an officer responded to the scene, one suspect ran out in front of them, according to a spokesperson for the Dayton Police Department.

Body camera video shows the officer use the front tire of their bike to trip the suspect, who has been identified as 22-year-old Elijah Murph-Heard.
The crash caused the officer to flip off their bike and hurt themself, the spokesperson said.
Another officer is heard calling for a medic saying, “Got an officer with a broken arm.”
A second officer from a different department also knocked Murph-Heard down with a bike, but he got up and kept running, according to the spokesperson.
Body camera video from another officer shows several officers chase Murph-Heard and use a taser to arrest him.
Murph-Heard reportedly had a stolen gun and is legally not allowed to own a weapon, according to the spokesperson.
Officers arrested Murph-Heard heard and took him to Montgomery County Jail.
The spokesperson said the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office approved several charges for Murph-Heard, including having weapons while under disability, carrying a concealed weapon, receiving stolen property, obstructing official business and resisting arrest.
Brown Street from Stewart Street to Wyoming Street was closed for more than an hour as police worked to break up the crowds.
Officers and detectives conducting their investigation and reopened the road before 11:30 p.m.
No one was injured in the shots fired incident, according to the spokesperson.
