DAYTON — Theo Hale is a hero. So are hundreds of other people in the Miami Valley—hundreds of whom have turned out each day this week to donate blood.
I decided to join them this morning at the Community Blood Center in Dayton.

I arrived for my appointment that I scheduled on time, got registered, and had my hemoglobin, temperature, and blood pressure checked.
When everything checked out, I was taken to the donor chair where Maddy stuck me with a needle and began the process of donating my blood.
CBC spokesman Mark Pompilio said they saw an “incredible surge” of donors yesterday after the Surgeon General and Ohio Dept. of Health Director Dr. Amy Acton called on people to donate.
“I think people needed a little extra boost of confidence that it was safe to donate and okay to come here."
Pompilio said the blood supply is safe and the Covid19 virus is not transmitted through transfusion.
He said the CBC will be open Saturday from 7-1 and will have rare Sunday hours from 8-2 for those who wish to donate.
As for Hale, he’s already donated 39 times in his young life. He said he’s going for a thousand!
