The U.S. Marshals Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team (SOFAST) was working with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office to serve a warrant for felonious assault at an apartment complex off Bellcreek Lane when they were shot at, according to U.S. Marshal Michael Black.

An officer was shot in the leg and was taken to a local hospital. Black said they were in “pretty good condition” and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Black would not confirm if the officer was a liaison officer or a federal officer.

An hours-long standoff ensued after the officer was shot. As shown on News Center 7 at 5:00, our cameras caught SWAT team members firing concussion grenades and distraction devices into the apartment during it.

Montgomery County Sheriff Rob Streck confirmed the man inside the apartment was dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

At this point, investigators do not believe any law enforcement officers fired shots during the shooting and standoff.

Streck also said that several fires had been set inside the apartment which the Trotwood Fire Department was helping put out.

News Center 7 cameras caught a significant police presence at Miami Valley Hospital not long after the shooting was reported. At least four marked police cruisers with their lights on were at the hospital’s emergency department entrance, which was temporarily blocked. This is consistent with previous responses to officers being injured in the line of duty. We also saw several law enforcement officers rush the task force officer into the emergency department.

The shooting and standoff also caused Trotwood Preparatory and Fitness Academy to go on lockdown. A teacher who had left to get pizza for a party for her students was emotional thinking about her students as she returned to the school, unable to go back inside.

“I’m thinking of what they might be going through, I don’t want them to be scared especially since they don’t understand the gravity of what’s going on,” Stephanie Chambers said.
