Fall colors are peaking this weekend; Here’s why

The Miami Valley is experiencing one of the most vibrant fall color seasons it has seen in years!

Leaves change colors for two main reasons, the loss of daylight and cooler temperatures signal the tree to stop producing chlorophyll and their true colors will emerge. Weather though can change how vibrant the colors are and how long our fall foliage stays on the trees.

This year, we saw normal precipitation in the summer then a beautiful stretch of cool mornings and sunny dry days leading into fall. Those conditions lead to very vibrant fall leaves!

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources released a new fall color update and all of the state parks and nature preserves in the Miami Valley are experiencing peak fall colors.

This means getting out to Indian Lake, Sycamore State Park or John Bryan State Park this weekend should be beautiful! Hueston Woods is the only area starting to see fading color.

Since this weekend will be dry, sunny and mild, it really is the best chance to see the fall foliage before we start seeing the leaves fade and fall.
