Back to School Science: Baking Soda Experiment

Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini joined Jordan Utterback and some young scientists at Boonshoft Museum of Discovery to learn about chemical and physical reactions. The kids put on their safety goggles and began working on observing the changes that can occur when mixing Calcium Chloride, Baking Soda and water.

Adding water to Calcium Chloride in a plastic bag allowed for an exothermic reaction to take place because heat was released. Next, adding baking soda to the mix cooled the water in the bag down because heat was absorbed which is an endothermic. Finally, when all three ingredients were in the bag, the kids noticed bubbles started to form. This is because the combination of the three produces carbon dioxide!

You can enjoy these fun experiments at the Do Lab throughout the week. To learn more about the schedule at Boonshoft, click here.
