Red Scare moves on to The Basketball Tournament quarterfinals, set for Friday at UD Arena

DAYTON — UPDATE (July 27): The Red Scare, the University of Dayton men’s basketball alumni squad, has reached its first-ever The Basketball Tournament quarterfinal by outlasting The Money Team, 83-81, Wednesday night at UD Arena.

The win means the UD alumni team will play at the Arena on Friday night against the winner of the West Virginia Regional.

The winning score was set up by Scoochie Smith, who found Josh Cunningham with a pass in the lane.

Darrell Davis put in a team-high 18 points to go along with seven rebounds for The Red Scare.

Former NCAA Division I scoring champion Jimmer Fredette, the leader of The Money Team, was held to 10 points.

TMT’s Mitchell Creek led all scorers with 19 points.

The Red Scare led 39-37 at the half, fighting back from a 12-2 run by The Money Team to start the game.

July 26: The University of Dayton men’s basketball alumni team, The Red Scare, advanced to the finals of the Dayton Regional of The Basketball Tournament (TBT) by defeating the Golden Eagles, 62-56, Tuesday night at the UD Arena.

Jordan Sibert led all scorers with 19 points, including the game winning three-pointer during the Elam Ending to seal the win. Scoochie Smith added 10 points while Josh Cunningham grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Darrell Davis scored the game’s first basket to put Red Scare ahead, 2-0, but the Golden Eagles went on a 9-0 run to take an 9-2 lead as they held Red Scare scoreless for over four minutes. The Golden Eagles led 17-7 after one quarter.

They led 24-15 with 5:27 left in the first half but Red Scare came back.

Ryan Mikesell’s three-pointer them within five, 25-20. Darius Johnson-Odom scored to put the Golden Eagles up, 29-22, over a minute left until halftime but Joe Thomasson’s trey got them within four, 29-25. After a stop, Vee Sanford buried a three right before halftime and Golden Eagles led, 29-28, at halftime.

Red Scare trailed, 32-30, but Sibert scored 11 straight points, including three treys to put The Red Scare ahead, 41-32, with 3:21 left in the quarter. Smith’s three-pointer gave Red Scare their biggest lead of the game, 44-34, with 2:49 left in the third. But the Golden Eagles pulled within six, 46-40, with a chance to get closer as the third quarter ended. Johnson-Odom missed a three and C.J. Walker grabbed the miss and banked in a shot from just past midcourt to give Red Scare a 49-40 lead after three.

The Golden Eagles scored nine straight points to begin the fourth quarter to tie the game at 49-49 with 6:49 to play. Red Scare got two free throws by Smith and a dunk by Trevor Thompson to go up, 53-49. Golden Eagles responded with two free throws each by Jamil Wilson and Elgin Cook to tie the game at 53 apiece entering the Elam Ending with under four minutes left. The first team to 61 points would win the game.

Josh Cunningham opened the scoring in the Elam Ending with a layup to put The Red Scare ahead, 55-53. Vander Blue Iii made one of two free throws for the Golden Eagles to cut it to one, 55-54. Smith scored four straight points to extend the advantage to 59-54. Cook knocked down two foul shots and the Golden Eagles trailed 59-56. Red Scare needed a basket to win it and Sibert’s three sealed it.

The Red Scare will play The Money Team tonight at 7 p.m. in the Dayton Regional Championship. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.

The winner will play in the TBT Quarterfinals Friday night against the winner of the West Virginia Regional at 9 p.m. at UD Arena.
