Game Recap: Bengals fall to Rams in Super Bowl LVI

LOS ANGELES — The Cincinnati Bengals came up short in Super Bowl LVI, losing 23-20 to the Los Angeles Rams. The Bengals finish a historic season as AFC Champions.

UPDATE @ 10:00 p.m.:

Bengals turn the ball over on downs with less than a minute left to go. Rams run the clock out to win Super Bowl LVI.

UPDATE @ 9:53 p.m.:

Stafford finds Cupp for the touchdown to put the Rams ahead. Gay’s extra point makes it 23-20 with 1:25 to go in the game.

UPDATE @ 8:53 p.m.:

Gay’s 41-yard field goal is good. Bengals still lead 16-20 with just under six minutes left in the third quarter.

UPDATE @ 8:43 p.m.:

McPherson hits a 38-yard field goal to extend Cincinnati’s lead to 13-20. with just over 10 minutes left in the third quarter.

UPDATE @ 8:33 p.m.:

In the first play of the second half, Bengals’ quarterback Joe Burrow connects with Higgins for a 75-yard touchdown. Bengals lead 13-17.

UPDATE @ 7:32 p.m.:

Bengals score their first touchdown on a Joe Mixon pass to Tee Higgins in the endzone. McPherson’s extra point is good. Bengals cut the Rams’ lead to 13-10 with just under six minutes left in the first half.

UPDATE @ 7:21 p.m.:

Stafford finds wide receiver Cooper Kupp in the back of the endzone for the touchdown. Rams lead 13-7.

UPDATE @ 7:11 p.m.:

Evan McPherson nails a 29-yard field goal to get the Bengals’ scoring started. They trail 7-3 with under 30 seconds left in the first quarter.

UPDATE @ 6:52 p.m.:

With just over six minutes left in the first quarter, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford connected with Odell Beckham, Jr. for a touchdown. Rams take the lead 7-0 after kicker Matt Gay makes the extra point.

Super Bowl LVI will be played Sunday with the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams battling for football’s biggest prize.

Kickoff from Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium is at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Various sportsbooks place the Rams as the favorites in the game by around four points.

The Bengals advanced to the franchise’s third Super Bowl appearance after defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game 27-24 on January 30.

The Rams are representing the NFC after defeating the San Francisco 49ers on Championship Sunday 20-17.

For the Bengals Super Bowl LVI is team’s third appearance in the NFL’s title game and the first since 1989. The Bengals previously played in Super Bowls XVI in 1982 and XXIII in 1989, both times against the San Francisco 49ers. Cincinnati is still searching for their first Super Bowl victory in playoff history, losing to the 49ers in both previous Super Bowl appearances.

The Rams will be the second team in NFL history to play on their home field for the Super Bowl, with the previous instance coming just last year. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hosted Super Bowl LV at their Raymond James Stadium and defeated the Chiefs.

For Los Angeles this is the franchise’s fifth Super Bowl appearance and third with the franchise being based in Los Angeles. As a California-based team the Rams lost both their previous Super Bowl appearances: Super Bowl XIV against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1980 and Super Bowl LIII in 2019 against the New England Patriots.

The Rams won Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000 against the Tennessee Titans when the team was based in St. Louis, but lost two years later to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVI in 2002.

The Bengals and Rams have not met since 2019, when both teams looked a lot different than they do now. The Rams won the game at the Los Angeles Coliseum 24-10.
