YOUNGSTOWN — The Dayton Flyers suffered its first loss of the 2022 football season Saturday afternoon at Youngtown State, 49-16, at Stambaugh Stadium in Youngtown. The Flyers fall to 1-1 on the season.
YSU quarterback Demeatric Crenshaw passed for a school record five touchdowns and Jaleel McLaughlin ran for 129 yards and touchdown as Youngtown State had over 470 yards of total offense.
UD freshman quarterback Dante Casciola went 17-26 for 134 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also ran for a score. Jake Chisholm led the Flyers with 33 rushing yards.
Dayton went three and out to start the game and Latrell Fordham capped an eight play, 57-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown catch to go up, 7-0.
On UD’s next possession, Casciola was picked off and it set up a 17-yard touchdown pass from Crenshaw to Bryce Oliver and YSU led, 14-0.
The Flyers went three and out on their next series and Jaleel McLaughlin’s 52-yard touchdown catch put them ahead, 21-0, after one quarter.
In the second quarter, Cole Hildebrand forced and recovered a fumble for Dayton and it set up a 34-yard field by Sam Webster to cut it to 21-3.
Crenshaw hit Max Tomzak for a 27-yard touchdown to expand the lead to 28-3.
UD responded with an eight play, 82 yard drive capped by an eight-yard touchdown pass from Casciola to Chisholm and the Flyers trailed, 28-10, at the break.
Dayton got their second touchdown of the game of another Youngtown State turnover in fourth quarter.
Drew Robertson forced a fumble and Jeremy Jonozzo recovered it. Three plays later, Casciola ran four yards for a touchdown and UD trailed, 35-16.
The Penguins added two more touchdowns to cap the scoring.
Dayton plays their first home game of the season Saturday, September 17, against Kentucky State at Welcome Stadium. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
