Bengals open the season losing to the Steelers in overtime

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Bengals begin the 2022 season losing in overtime to the Pittsburgh Steelers, 23-20, at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati.

Chris Boswell made a 53-yard field goal as time expired in overtime.

The Bengals never led in this game.

Joe Burrow was sacked seven times and he threw four interceptions. Cincinnati turned it over five times.

The mistakes began early for the Bengals on its first possession of the game when Burrow was intercepted by Minkah Fitzpatrick and he returned 31-yards for a touchdown and Pittsburgh led, 7-0.

Evan McPherson made a 59-yard field goal to put Cincinnati on the board but Burrow was sacked and fumbled on their third possession and it led to a Boswell field goal and the Steelers led, 10-3, after one quarter.

Burrow was intercepted by T.J. Watt in the second quarter and it led to a one-yard touchdown catch by Najee Harris to give Pittsburgh a 17-3 lead.

The Steelers got their third pick of the first half when Cameron Sutton picked off a deep pass intended for Tyler Boyd. The Bengals trailed 17-6 at halftime.

The teams exchanged punts to start the second half and Bengals scored on a two-yard touchdown catch by Boyd and the two-point conversion cut it to 17-14 after three quarters.

Boswell’s 48-yard field goal put the Steelers ahead, 20-14, to start the fourth quarter and Burrow threw his fourth interception, this time by Ahkello Witherspoon with 8:23 to play.

The Bengals drove to the Steelers one-yard line with 2:48 remaining but Joe Mixon was stopped for a two-yard loss on first and goal. Cincinnati could not punch it in and turned the ball over on downs with 1:56 remaining.

After forcing a three and out, the Bengals got the ball back and Burrow hit J’Marr Chase for a one-yard touchdown pass with two seconds remaining to tie the game at 20-20. But the extra point was blocked by Minkah Fitzpatrick and the game went into overtime.

The Steelers went three and out to start overtime and Cincinnati marched to Pittsburgh’s 11-yard line but McPherson missed a 29-yard field goal following a high snap.

Bowsell’s 55-yard field goal hit the left upright with 2:27 left.

After forcing a Bengal punt, the Steelers got the ball with 56 seconds left. Mitchell Trubisky hit Pat Freiermuth for gains of 29 yards and 10 yards to the Bengal 35-yard line. Three plays later, Boswell hit from 53-yards out as time expired.

Cincinnati will look to bounce back on September 18 against the Dallas Cowboys. Game time is at 4:25 p.m at AT&T Stadium in Irving, Texas. You can watch the game on Channel 7.
