The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office said in a report filed late last week that the snowcat, a combination snow grooming vehicle and Caterpillar, was sliding toward Renner’s adult nephew. While trying to jump back into the cab of the snowcat, Renner was pulled under the vehicle and crushed, CNN reported.

According to the report, Renner did not engage the snowcat’s parking brake, which would have stopped the vehicle from sliding and rolling.

The 52-year-old actor had been trying to help his nephew pull his truck from the snow near his Reno, Nevada, property, E! Online reported.

“The Pistenbully snow groomer began sliding causing Renner to exit the vehicle without setting the emergency brake,” the sheriff’s office said in the report obtained by CNN.

“Although the Pistenbully had some mechanical issues, it is believed based on our mechanical inspection that the parking brake would keep the Pistenbully from moving forward. When Renner attempted to stop or divert the Pistenbully to avoid injury to (his nephew), he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over.”

The brake light did not work on the snowcat, and there may have been other “mechanical issues” that factored into the accident.

Renner told investigators that he had towed his nephew’s truck onto the street before the snowcat began sliding sideways and then rolling down a hill. That’s when he jumped from the vehicle’s cab and then realized it was heading toward his nephew. Renner tried to get back into the cab to stop the vehicle, but doing so meant he had to climb onto the moving track, which then pulled him under the left side of the equipment.

Renner was “completely crushed” by the vehicle, and had difficulty breathing. A 911 call log, shared by CNN, said that the right side of his chest collapsed and his upper torso was crushed.

He had blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries, Entertainment Weekly reported.

Renner was flown to a Nevada hospital, where he had emergency surgery the day after the accident, People magazine reported. He spent two weeks in the intensive care unit, E! Online reported.

He’s undergone physical therapy, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The “Hawkeye” actor said on Instagram earlier this week that he had broken more than 30 bones in the accident.
