Films such as “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Elvis” were expected to be nominated about a half dozen times each, The Associated Press reported.

Leading the nominations was Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” with 11, including ones for Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, along with best picture and directing.

Different from last year’s awards, when Netflix and streaming films dominated, this year, big-screen films were once again back in the spotlight thanks to films such as “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Avatar: The Way of Water,” the AP reported.

But while the “Top Gun” sequel got a best picture and other nominations, the star of the film — Tom Cruise — was not nominated for an award, the Los Angeles Times reported.

It was a similar story for “Avatar” director James Cameron who was not nominated for his directing of the film.
