Ohio lawmakers react to SCOTUS abortion case

WASHINGTON DC — We are getting reaction from local lawmakers to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

Former Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, the Democratic candidate for Ohio Governor, said access to abortion and reproductive care is on the ballot in November.

Tim Ryan, Ohio Democratic candidate for US Senate, said in a statement, ““Today’s disastrous decision is the largest case of government overreach in my lifetime. By overturning Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court is gutting a long-established right in order to put politicians between women and their doctors. Even worse, this ruling gives the green light to those here in Ohio who have introduced legislation that would deny women access to potentially lifesaving care, and threaten to put women and doctors in jail.”

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost praised the decision of Supreme Court. “This decision returns abortion policy to the place it has always belonged to the elected policy branches of government. It never belonged to the courts.”

Ohio Lt. Governor Jon Husted issued the following statement on the Dobbs v. Jackson decision. “As we transition as a nation from Roe to Dobbs, we all need to do our best to understand and respect the heartfelt, genuine differences of opinions among our families, friends, neighbors and communities.”

Ohio Secretary of State of Frank LaRose said the ruling is win for state’s rights.

Ohio Auditor of the State Keith Faber called it a major win for the pro-life movement.

Ohio Senate President Matt Huffman of Lima called the ruling, “overdue,” and, “a turning point in our nation’s history.”

U.S. Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio’s Fourth Congressional District issued a statement on Twitter, “Life wins.” He also said, “God Bless Justice Thomas. God Bless Justice Alito.”

U.S. Representative Joyce Beatty of Ohio’s Third Congressional District strongly disagreed with the Supreme Court’s. “A woman’s right to choose should be non-negotiable.”

U.S. Representative Bob Latta from Ohio’s Fifth Congressional District said Friday, “Today, we celebrate life and all of those who are committed to protecting and defending the most innocent among us- the unborn.”

U.S. Representative Warren Davidson from Ohio’s Eight Congressional District called the ruling, “a win for the right to life.”

U.S. Representative Dave Joyce from Ohio’s 14th Congressional District called the ruling, “a long overdue victory for states’ rights and the sanctity of life.”

U.S. Representative Brad Wenstrup from Ohio’s 2nd District said he was pleased with the Supreme Court’s decision.

Ohio US Senator Rob Portman released this statement, “Today’s ruling is consistent with my view that policy questions regarding abortion should be decided by the elected representatives of the people, not the Supreme Court. Through its ruling today, the Court made this clear. The states already play a significant role in abortion policy, but have been constrained by various Supreme Court rulings. Now the issue of abortion will be decided by the states and the elected representatives closest to the people.”

Ohio Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown called it a radical decision, “by an increasingly out-of-touch court.

Dayton city mayor Jeffrey Mims said Friday’s Supreme Court ruling undid, “500years of precedent and is a direct attack on women’s right.”

The Ohio Democratic Party said Friday called the decision disastrous and that, “Ohio’s fundament right to reproductive care is on the line this year.”

JD Vance, GOP candidate for US Senate in Ohio, called it great day.

“It vindicates a half century of work, and gives us an opportunity to live up our founding creed--that all of us are truly created equal.”

The Ohio Republican Party called the ruling a historic day for all Americans.

“A grave injustice of judicial activism has been overturned, and the right to govern is restored to the people of Ohio.”

State Representative Jena Powell praised the ruling after it was initially announced.
