Recent rains help subdue ‘abnormally dry’ conditions in parts of Miami Valley

MIAMI VALLEY — The U.S. Drought Monitor released July 21 had some positive news for the Miami Valley.

Rounds of thunderstorms have helped to increase moisture in the soil so that “abnormally dry” conditions are no longer being experienced in counties like Butler and Preble.

Rain in the Miami Valley last weekend, July 16-17, set records at the Dayton International Airport with 2.64 inches falling on Sunday. The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network showed rain gauges across the Miami Valley ranged from 2-4 inches.

The end of July and early August temperature and precipitation outlooks from the Climate Prediction Center show a high likelihood for above normal temperatures and precipitation. Hopefully, a warm and wet pattern will help to keep the soil moist through the end of growing season.
