Mechanicsburg man sent to prison for selling fake hunting leases online

MECHANICSBURG — A Mechanicsburg man has been sentenced to prison for his connection in a scene to solicit payments from people who thought they were buying hunting leases.

The United States Department of Justice report Nathanal L. Knox, 30, from Mechanicsburg, placed online advertisements for hunting leases, supposedly available on several parcels of land, throughout 2019.

Knox had no right to sell the leases for the properties.

Reports say the man placed advertisements on at least 38 different Facebook pages where he solicited payments for the leases.

Prices ranged from $400 to $5,000, according to the USDJ. Knox would send contracts and instructions via email after receiving the first payment.

At least 68 people were solicited for payment by the defendant, all of whom lived outside of Ohio. Knox received over $34,000 in initial payments from 59 of these individuals.

Knox was sentenced to one year and one day in prison, three years of supervised release, and restitution of $18,037.

“The defendant was sentenced to prison for orchestrating a fraud scheme that preyed on unsuspecting individuals from all corners of the country,” said Assistant Attorney General Todd Kim of the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division.
