Local mailman says he feels like ‘Santa’s helper’ while out work during the holidays

KETTERING — Millions of people depend on mail carriers to get our holiday cards and gifts to the right addresses, on time.

While the holiday season is thought of as “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” for many, it’s the busiest time of the year for postal carriers.

Kettering USPS postal worker Daniel Middleton starts his day at 7 a.m., loading his truck with cards, letters and packages for his route.

Middleton said there are things he enjoys about his job, like the people.

“Everyone here in the neighborhood is great. They look out for me,” Middleton said.

But, he admitted there were a few downsides.

“What I don’t like so much [is] the weather,” Middleton said. “It can be your best friend, or your worst enemy.”

The pressure is on during the holiday season. Customers often know when to expect a delivery from him now due to tracking numbers.

“Customers have informed delivery, so they know exactly what’s coming to them that day,” Middleton said.

Middleton said because of that, he does his best to make sure he meets customers’ expectations.

With more people turning to online shopping, Middleton has noticed more catalogs being delivered.

Middleton said doing his job and getting mail and packages where they need to go during the holiday season makes him feel like one of Santa’s helpers.

“I definitely feel like I’m one of Santa’s helpers,” Middleton said. “Delivering and making sure people get their packages. Bringing the holiday joy.”
