Sheriff’s captain: 2 children hit in Harrison Twp. after leaving school bus; Driver to be charged

HARRISON TWP. — Two girls, believed to be ages 5 and 8, were reportedly in stable condition from non-life threatening injuries after they were struck by a van Tuesday afternoon in Harrison Twp. after a school bus had dropped them off, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Capt. Andy Flagg said.

The driver of the van that hit them, left the scene and returned on foot, is cooperating with the sheriff’s office and will be charged, Flagg said.

The driver’s name was not released because that person has not been charged.

Two children, ages 5 and 7, were hit by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon in Harrison Twp. and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is investigating how it happened.

The incident at Hancock and West Hillcrest avenues was reported just after 3:45 p.m., according to Montgomery County Regional Dispatch records. The caller reported that at least two juveniles had been hit by a vehicle described as a white work style van.

One of the children was found laying in the street, according to the incident report filed in the incident, and the second child was in a house. Both victims are being identified as girls.

At least one of two medic units dispatched made a transport to Dayton Children’s Hospital.

The incident report indicates that the van left the scene, taking Hillcrest. Deputies located the vehicle just before 4 p.m. in the driveway of a residence in the 2500 block of Falmouth Avenue.

One of the calls to 9-1-1 came from the driver of the van, according to the incident report.

Another caller to 9-1-1 was frantic, according to an audio recording News Center 7 obtained through a public records request.

“Somebody hit little kids in the street! Ya’ll need to hurry up and get here!” said the caller, a male who could be heard asking other people at the scene not to move or pick up the child who was left in the street after she was hit.

“They know not to move her,” he told the operator.

He told the operator the child was breathing.

“It was a white, like a work van” that hit the children and did not stop, said the male caller who explained he was cutting the grass when the incident occurred.

“I think the person who did it came back to the scene!” he told the emergency dispatch operator.
