Dayton firefighters were dispatched around 1 p.m. to the 3800 block of Lakebend Drive to reports of an apartment fire, according to Montgomery County Regional Dispatch.

The building was described as a six-unit home with the fire coming from a unit possibly located in the basement, according to dispatch notes.

News Center 7 spoke with a man Saturday night who said he saw smoke from the fire in his hallway and firefighters had to use a ladder to get his baby out of the apartment through a second-story window.

“I wake up and hear somebody outside screaming, ‘Get out, get out, get out,’” said Sherod Smith. “I’m like, let me look out the window. I go to the front door and look out the door but it’s pitch black. I can go out this way and there’s only one way out.”

Firefighters grabbed the child and then cleared the hallway of smoke.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
