Damage reported after severe storm system warning of tornadoes rips through Miami Valley

Damages to private property and natural terrain were reported throughout Miami Valley after an overnight storm brought high-speed winds and rain that led to multiple tornado warnings.

The National Weather Service, county dispatches, and residents reported various forms of damages following an overnight storm that began at approximately 11:10 p.m. Friday, and lasted until 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Some of the notable damages occurred to properties, particularly barns. The National Weather Service reported that a barn collapsed from the high-speed winds in Saint Marys at Auglaize County. Several other barns were damaged near the Park Road in Fort Recovery at Mercer County.

A barn and fence were destroyed in Troy at Miami County where a “tornado-producing” storm, moving east at around 50 mph, was seen, according to the National Weather Service. Miami County Sheriff’s Office also reported multiple barns torn down near the same area at state Route 718 and Lytle Road.

Numerous grain bins were torn down and a “medium sized brick building” partially demolished from the severe storm system moving across the Midwest, the National Weather Service reported.

Apart from the erosion to structures, emergency responders cited damages to power lines and utility poles.

Downed power poles were reported on state Route 718 in Concord Township, Park Road just west of state Route 49, 1200 block of South Dugan Road, and 10700 block of state Route 47, according to county dispatches and initial traffic on emergency scanners.

The numerous downed power lines and utility poles led to tens of thousands of people losing electricity during the night.

Most of the reported outages stemmed from AES Ohio customers, making up about 88 percent of the reports, according to each company’s outage maps. However, the companies managed to decrease those numbers as they worked to repair the broken equipment throughout the night.

Further damages to trees and natural terrain were scattered throughout including, Morrow in Warren County, Tipp City in Miami County, and US-68 near Campground Road.

The storm’s impact also expanded beyond the Ohioan border.

A tornado in Illinois collapsed the famous Apollo Theater’s roof, killing one person and injuring over 25. While, the tornadoes in Arkansas killed at least three people.

More damages are expected to be reported during the day after sifting through the aftermath.
