MONTGOMERY COUNTY — Deputies have not caught the person who shot a 10-year-old girl in the head.

The bullet grazed the girl, and deputies said this girl came within an inch of losing her life.
“An inch one other way and we might be talking about a homicide,” Jeremy Roy, chief of staff with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, said.
Montgomery County deputies told us hospital staff called them and Dayton officers when a mom showed up with her daughter at Dayton Children’s Monday evening.

Pictures show the car by the hospital’s main entrance surrounded by yellow crime scene tape with what looks like a bullet hole in the front passenger window, with all the glass in that window cracked.
Deputies said Mom told them she was driving Monday and stopped at a red light at North Dixie and Siebenthaler in Harrison Township just before 6:30 p.m.
“They heard a loud boom, and they weren’t sure what it was. And it was at that time that the child in the back said that her head had hurt. Mom saw some of the bleeding and they drove immediately down to Children’s,” Roy said.
Deputies said they’re working to find out who pulled the trigger and what led up to the violence.
“We still don’t know if they were the intended target. If this was somebody else was the intended target. If this was just a round that was fired from blocks away that wound up going through the car,” Roy said.
Our crew saw deputies working to find evidence near Siebenthaler and Dixie Monday evening.
They were also at the hospital with Dayton police.
Tuesday, the sheriff’s office described it as an “all hands on deck” investigation.
“You’re talking about a 10-year-old girl that came very close to losing her life. It’s just a traumatic event for us, for the community. So it’s something that (is) kind of all hands on deck right now for us to kind of backtrack what took place and try to track down who fired this round,” Roy said.
Deputies are working on tracking down any videos that might have captured the shooting or what led up to it.
