6-State Trooper project focuses on making highways safer for drivers

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is joining forces with members of a 6-State Trooper Project to focus on seat belt enforcement.

Starting Monday, May 23, the initiative will begin, and it’s expected to continue through Monday, May 30.

According to a press release, not wearing a seatbelt is a secondary offense, and troopers will continue zero-tolerance enforcement when drivers are stopped for other violations and are not wearing their safety belts.

OSHP will be joined by other law enforcement agencies, such as the Indiana State Police, Kentucky State Police, Michigan State Police, Pennsylvania State Police, and the West Virginia State Police.

“Properly using a safety belt is a simple step that has proven to save lives,” said Colonel Richard S. Fambro, Patrol superintendent. “Motorists must commit to buckling up every trip, every time, so they are protected if they are involved in a crash.”

This project will coincide with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Click It or Ticket campaign and Operation CARE.
