2021 hurricane season comes to close; ranks as 4th costliest season on record

The 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season came to a close yesterday. Although hurricane season quietly came to an end with no significant tropical systems during October or November, 2021 did finish as another above average season in terms of the number of named storms.

2021′s Atlantic Hurricane Season featured 21 named storms, seven hurricanes, and four major hurricanes (category 3+). Of those, six tropical storms and two hurricanes made landfall in the United States. The strongest of which was category four Hurricane Ida which struck southern Louisiana on August 29th.

This year’s hurricane season got off to an early start. Subtropical Storm Ana formed on May 22nd. This made 2021 the seventh consecutive year that a named storm formed prior to the official start of hurricane season on June 1st.

The 2021 Hurricane Season produced an estimated 70.5 billion dollars of damage. This ranks 4th on the list of costliest hurricane seasons.

Even with as active and costly as this year’s hurricane season was, 2021 was a quieter year than 2020 which featured 30 named storms - the most on record.
